Since BB was a baby, Billy and Bob liked to say he was going to be an X-Gamer when he grew up. I think they mostly said that to get a rise out of me, but it may have been a bit foreshadowing.

The other day, BB asked to put the ottoman in the middle of the living room floor. He then lined up pillows, a folding metal tray and a plastic lap desk - which he then thought he was going to jump over.

I told him I didn't think it was a good idea, so he moved the trays - but still jumped. ... I can only do so much.

BB went trick-or-treating for the first time ever at the campground we stayed at this weekend. He made an adorable duck! Everyone said so. They also said it was perfect weather for a duck, which it was - cold and rainy. But, we saw a gorgeous, full, double rainbow! (Real pictures coming as soon as we get them off the camera.)

Back to trick-or-treating.

BB was really shy and his 'trick-or-treat's and 'thank you's were whispered, but he said them. He really liked the concept (surprise, surprise) and has enjoyed choosing which candy to eat next. 'Maybe this one' he says, then picks up another for consideration, 'maybe this one'.

When we first asked him what he wanted to be for Halloween several weeks ago, he said a duck.

We don't know why he wants to be a duck, but that's been his consistent answer. So, a duck it is.

BB joined me at work this morning and while he was completely happy calling his daddy every two minutes from my work phone, a coworker brought these over for him to play with. I'm in love. (So was he, but mostly it was me.)

Billy and I are taking the laid-back approach to potty training. I truly believe that BB won't be wearing diapers when he's 5, so why sweat it? Plus, he has a lot going on right now, having just started preschool (where they actually LEARN stuff) and moving to our new house.

That said, he's been showing interest for several months and has been doing pretty well. We bought him a potty. We reward him with stickers. We encourage. We support. We never yell.* Even when he pees on my foot.

Since we've moved, we've even been encouraging BB to pee off the porch. Say what you will, he loves it, and my dad swears this is why my brother potty trained so early (you're welcome, Jason).

Billy is anti-Pull-Ups, but we wanted to keep our positive momentum going, so we let BB pick out 'big boy underwear' the other night. They are a hit! He wore them to school yesterday and, we're told, showed everyone the extra pair we stuffed in his pants pocket in case he had an accident. He only had one - all day! Yep, the kid went a solid 15 hours in underoos! (Technically, he kind of had an accident at home. He started, then stopped, but still required a wardrobe change, so we can call it two accidents. Still, not bad.)

Last night, he was pretty sad that he had to put on a night-time diaper. He resolved this by putting a pair of big boy underwear on over his diaper, but not before he tried them on his head.

* There's a mom at school who yells at her kids all.the.time. The worst was when her youngest son peed his pants right after they got to school. You could hear her yelling clear out the door of the building. I don't ever want to be that mom.

BB's been spotting the moon on the way to work the past few mornings, which makes him really excited. He says it's following us and gets sad when he can't see it anymore.

Yesterday, and again today, he said something like, 'There's a man up dere'. When we ask for more details, he doesn't elaborate, but I'm pretty sure someone's told him there's a man on (or in) the moon. Or maybe he sees him. (I never could, but that doesn't mean he's not there, right?)

For BB's second birthday, we got him a Strider, aka pedaless, bike. He loves it and can get around pretty good on it. I don't think we use it outside enough for him to get the full benefits, but we'll work on that. The full benefits include earlier and better balance. Basically, pedaless bikes are supposed to help you skip the training wheel part of learning to ride a bike.

We don't care when BB learns to ride a bike. Or if he uses training wheels. We're just suckers for gadgets.

So, all that said, it's crazy to see my son ride a bike. Mostly because we didn't teach him. There've been a lot of times over the past 2 1/2 years where I've been amazed and saddened by this fact. For example, the first time I did Ring Around the Rosie with BB, I thought he was soooooo smart because he picked up on it so fast. Then I realize he probably plays Ring Around the Rosie at school.

He's also learned the Wheels on the Bus and Row, Row, Row Your Boat and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, not from me, but from his teachers. I also 'blame' them for his ability to count to 9 and identify his colors.

Billy and I choose this for BB. We knew this could happen, but sometimes it still stings.

(Wow, a post that was supposed to be about how cute BB looks on a tricycle really took a turn, eh?)

We've been terrible at keeping this blog up-to-date, but that's completely BB's fault! He keeps us on our toes!

He's changed a lot since the last time we wrote any real update and I feel like I've missed sharing a lot of milestones. So, for now, please enjoy this one.

Just the past week or so, BB has really started expressing his likes, dislikes and feelings. I think a lot of this has been encouraged by his teachers at Child Care. We know they are working with him to 'use his words' when someone does something he doesn't like, such as stealing his toy.

Last week, after taking a drink of pop, he said, 'This is goood'. The other day, after taking a bite of beef jerky he said, 'No like'. And, after licking garlic salt off his hand (don't ask), he said, 'I like'.

It's awesome to hear him share these opinions! One of my favorite happened this morning when he and his daddy were wrestling. Billy 'fell' on BB, who exclaimed, 'This is fun!' and 'Daddy funny'.

I'm excited to find out what else he does and doesn't like!

Baby B. loves playing with the kitchen at his besties' house, so when I saw this beauty on Woot for $12.99, I had to jump. Granted, he probably won't play with it at our house (isn't everything cooler at other people's houses?), but it was a gamble I was willing to take.

More Mo!

On a fluke, when BB was still a teeny tiny baby, we bought him Pigeon Wants a Puppy! by Mo Willems, mostly because it was about a puppy - and Amazon recommended it.

That book instantly became one of my favorites. Cute, funny, light-hearted but with a message, adorable pictures. We were hooked.

The Pigeon has Feelings, Too! was our next Mo Willems book and was just as cuter - if not cuter - than the first. So, imagine my joy when we found a series of Willems books at the library!

I wasn't familiar with the Elephant and Piggie books until then, but I'm already hooked. Are You Ready to Play Outside? is everything Mo's other books have been: funny, cute stories with a message.

BB loves this book, but I think I might be more excited than he is to go back to the library and get a new Elephant and Piggie book!

Field Trip to Grounds for Thought

Billy and his classmates took a second coffee-related field trip this month, this time to Grounds for Thought, a coffee house in Bowling Green.

While there, they got to see and feel roasted and non-roasted beans and learn how the beans arrive in Ohio (via big ships from around the world).
The kids also got to smell the flavoring used to make the beans different flavors and see it being added to the beans.

Finally, the kids got to see the beans being ground - before enjoying some hot chocolate (with whipped cream and sprinkles).

Our Monkey Wants to Swim

Back when this picture was taken (roughly July of 2009), I knew that one day BB was going to take swim lessons. Yes, his father was a competitive swimmer back in the day, but his mom doesn't swim very well at all. Some might say not at all.

Since I don't swim very well, I wanted BB to learn the skills I never did. After an impromptu swimming outing with the McCartts Friday, we decided it was time. That boy is fearless. He kept trying to push Billy and I away in the pool - he was ready to explore on his own. But little did he know, the pool was a bit bigger than the bathtub and he couldn't touch the bottom.

While it was fun to watch BB enjoy the pool so much, it was also terrifying. I almost drown when I was 2, according to my dad, so my spidey senses were on high alert. The main problem was that if something did go down, I, with my weak swimming skills, wouldn't have been much of a help. So, BB starts swimming lessons tomorrow. I should probably start, too.

I've finally figured out why everyone thinks their child is super smart - kids learn things a lot faster than we remember. Of course someone is going to think their child is smart if they know all their body parts by 18-months or animal sounds by 22-months. That just seems unreal. But, unless we start polling our friends and family, that could be normal. I don't remember learning that a cow moos, I've just always known it.

We have a very ornery son. He's a goofball. A funny, happy, energetic goofball. I'm pretty sure he takes after his dad in that sense.

He's in that awkward clothes stage where 18-months clothes are small and 24-month clothes are big. He's starting to like to wrestle and purposefully fall off the bed or couch. Yesterday, while wrestling, he licked my nose. Not sure why he did it, but it cracked me up, so he kept doing it. He likes to make people laugh.

He's starting to watch some cartoons in the morning. Right now it's just Timmy Time and Special Agent Oso. We watch them with him while we're getting ready in the morning and ask him to find things on screen, like a ball or bike or dog.

Billy still loves books, but he's starting to like toys. He got some fun new-to-him things this weekend that he loves - especially trucks, which joined us for dinner the other night.

He can get moody if he doesn't get his way - or when he's getting dropped off at Child Care in the morning - but so far it's very manageable, normal toddler stuff.

He's had a very exciting fall. He's fed a deer and some goats, met some llamas, rode a pony, met a bunch of relatives and ate candy corn for the first time. He's also developed a liking of Elmo, who he calls Melmo.

He also has a lot of stuff on tap - Thanksgiving at the lake, Christmas, snow, Santa. It's going to be a pretty great winter!

Meet Our New Babysitter

All the construction on our street has been annoying, but it's been fun to see BB become enthralled with it. At first, he showed cautious interest when he'd hear the trucks. We'd hold him in front of the window and he'd cling to us for dear life, all the while trying to get a closer look. A few days ago, he ran for safety when a bucket truck came around the corner. But as of yesterday, he's a fan. He likes standing on our built-in in the dining room, with us close by, of course, watching the big yellow machines. He also likes laying on his tummy on our bed, with his head on his hands and his feet in the air, watching the activity from our window. I'll be sad for him when they're done (although I'll be excited to be able to park in our driveway again).

Did He or Didn't He?

A couple weeks ago, BB came down with a high fever. We chalked it up to another ear infection and took him to the doctor. Our regular pediatrician wasn't available, which is probably part of what is causing my skepticism, but we got in right away, which was nice.

The sub doc diagnosed him with Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease, based on a peek at his throat and a pimple on his tongue. She told us to expect a rash, blisters, etc. She said he'd get worse before he got better and it sounded kinda gross.

About a week later, he got this one blister. We thought it was the official start of HFaM, but nothing else ever popped up. No rash. No other blisters. No mouth sores. Nuttin'.

So, we're confused. BB may have had the 'best' case of HFaM ever, or he was misdiagnosed. Either way, he's all good now!

Before you think we're terrible parents, I am less than 1 millimeter outside the frame of this photo. Now, onto the funny stuff.

Billy was cleaning gutters Friday when BB decided he wanted to help. With me right behind him, he climbed up a good 4 or 5 rungs all by himself! I couldn't believe it; he showed no fear - and would have kept going if Billy wasn't in his way.

I set him on the ground, Billy climbed down and we let him climb one more time so we could take a photo. We won't be encouraging it; I do not want an X-gamer on my hands!

I'm Going to Regret This

I know I'm going to regret writing this post, but I've been dying to share our good news: BB is 'sleeping' through the night!

I say 'sleeping' in quotation marks because he's still waking up, but he's not getting up, meaning he's not waking up and needing a bottle. Mostly, he wakes up and cries, we turn his mobile on and he falls back to sleep.

I love that our mobile has a remote; we don't even have to go into his room - we point and click from the hallway! I'm afraid that I've just jinxed us, but this is a big step and I had to share!

BB rode his first mechanical horse last night!
He grabbed the reins right away and wasn't the least bit scared.

He also wasn't scared the first time he rode this horse.
We have a definitely daredevil on our hands.

Happy Birthday Devo!

Today is the day that we decided to celebrate Devo's birthday. Since some jack a$$ decided to ditch a box of puppies on the side of the road in the hills of West Virginia we don't know when his actual birthday is. Although I do not approve of ditching dogs in the middle of nowhere I am glad that they decided to do the ditching the weekend we were on our whitewater rafting trip. He has been the greatest dog and we know that he will continue his greatness.

Recently I was going through pictures so that I could put some current ones on my digital photo frame. I came across this one and I absolutely love it, I had to stop the frame from doing the slide show so I could just have it up all day.
The Story:
We had just done some grocery shopping and A. could not wait to get home to have a cookie so she opened the bag before putting them in the trunk. Then after carrying all the bags in some of them had to wait on the floor to be put away. Little B. fully crawling and exploring everything found the open cookies and decided to check them out. Of course by check them out I mean put them in his mouth. We saw the cookies spilled across the floor and grabbed the camera in time to catch some of it.

Someone at Child Care put a paperclip in BB's hair to keep it out of his eyes today. I think someone needs a haircut. (Um, where do you take toddlers to get their hair cut?)

Happy 14-Month Birthday to Me!

BB is 14-months-old today! We sang to him, let him make a huge mess at dinner and gave him a nice little massage before bed. He's growing up so fast; I truly don't know where the time has gone. Here's what BB's up to:

* Fake coughing when we cough
* Walking like a champ
* Dancing
* Reading (he LOVES books)
* Exploring
* Pulling things out of drawers
* Stacking blocks
* Climbing into his stroller
* Giving high fives

BB likes to roam the house on his own, which we encourage. We like how independent he is, but we still keep a close eye on him. He hasn't been playing with his toys lately. If it's not a book or his popper, he isn't interested. He's started climbing into his umbrella stroller by himself and sitting there until we push him around. Luckily, the weather's been good, so we can push him outside and not just around the house! BB loves his baths and pushing buttons. He hates being told no, which we don't have to do a lot; he's a very happy, good-mannered baby. We're looking forward to spring's official arrival so we can get to the park. We found out last week that he loves slides! He also loves mac and cheese and chicken nuggets. He's not a picky eater at all, unlike his mom (so says his dad). Except for not sleeping through the night, everything is going great!
